Description

In this week of biking, you’ll have a chance to explore the natural wonders of Slovenia. No high-traffic asphalt roads. Most of the pedal-turning will be done off the beaten track, on countryside lanes, macadam roads, and single, all guiding you through pristine and diverse natural environments. From the tranquil paths in the vast spruce forests of Pokljuka to the remote trails below the epic mountain ridge of Košuta.

You will be astounded by the views on your way. This holiday doesn’t just take you to nature. It takes you to fantastic locations, surrounded by the high mountains of the Alps. This makes for some incredible panoramas and a lot of photo opportunities. Every day of cycling here will reward you again and again. You’ll see the sharp peaks of the Julian Alps surrounding Kranjska Gora and stop for the panoramic views of cute shepherd huts on Velika Planina. Just a week of this holiday will leave you with countless memories and photos of incredible views an average Joe sees in a lifetime. That is possible in Slovenia.

Itinerary

DAY 1 – Arrival in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia

After settling in your hotel at the centre of Ljubljana, you’ll get better acquainted with the team and the other participants in the holiday. We’ll make sure your bikes are adjusted to you and have a briefing on the details of this upcoming week of adventure.

DAY 2 – Velika Planina

At the beginning of the Alps and not far from Ljubljana lies the high mountain plateau of Velika Planina. Well-known for its authentic shepherd huts with mesmerising views of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the Ljubljana basin, it is also a fantastic MTB destination. It will be a day of high mountain biking on macadam trails and slightly more rugged pastoral paths. But every once in a while, we’re going to go down some super soft grassy terrain that feels like cycling on puffy clouds. All in all, the varied terrain of the plateau is an excellent introduction to the mountain biking world of Slovenia.

DAY 3 – Kranjska Gora

The second day of cycling will take us a little further from Ljubljana to the arguably most famous alpine resort of Slovenia. Because of its immediate alpine surroundings, Kranjska Gora is an all-year-round sports destination — Skiing in the winter, hiking and cycling in the other three seasons. This day’s tour will lead us through the Alpine Valleys, past the Zelenci Springs, and into the Karawanks mountains, from where you’ll be able to enjoy exquisite views onto the sharpest peaks of the Julian Alps. From there, we will then return down to Lake Jasna and relax with some refreshing drinks while the sun paints the mountains pink and slowly sets behind the horizon.

DAY 4 – Mountain biking in Ljubljana

Mountain biking in the heart of a European capital city — Doesn’t that sound like a weird juxtaposition? Not in the green country of Slovenia, and a capital city with lots of green areas. You will ride through pristine nature on cool forested areas and off-road single trails. There will also be lots of options for choosing different trails, making them suitable both for beginners and experienced mountain bikers. Even diehard mountain bikers will get their fair share of fun by challenging themselves on the downhill sections of the famous “Golovec Trails”.

DAY 5 – Pokljuka

On the fifth day of your holiday, we’ll take you to the heart of the Triglav National Park, to Pokljuka, the largest forested mountain plateau in Slovenia. It is covered by vast spruce forests, interspersed by countless trails with views of the Julian Alps. From time to time, green pastures with grazing cattle will open up in the middle of the magical forests. There, traditional cheese-making in authentic shepherd huts is still alive, so you’ll even be able to buy some.

After exploring the Alpine paradise of Pokljuka, we’ll ride down the road to the magnificent Lake Bled. There, we will check out the postcard-worthy views and taste the famous ‘Kremšnita’ cream cake. And if you’re up for it, we can visit the oldest castle in Slovenia, perched high on a cliff overlooking the lake.

DAY 6 – Alpine Pastures above Tržič

From the previous day’s vast forests, we’re going to the wide-open pastures below the grassy slopes of the Karawanks. The day will start with a short climb through the shady forest until we reach the open spaces below the longest ridge in Slovenia, the Košuta mountain. We’ll be riding on gravel tracks and single trails, breathing fresh air while accompanied by excellent views of the valley. Compared to the other locations we have visited until now, this one will be the most peaceful and wild. And as a cherry on top, you’ll also have a chance to try arguably the best ‘Štruklji’ in Slovenia, at the Kofce Hut.

DAY 7 – Kobariški stol

We’ve saved the best for last. Crossing the mountain of Kobariški Stol is one of the most amazing MTB experiences in Slovenia. We will drive over the Vršič mountain pass and down to the increasingly Mediterranean climate of the Soča Valley. From there, we will ascend the tough (but not for us e-bike riders) but extremely scenic old mule path from the First World War. The endless views of the valley and the grassy slopes above and below us are gorgeous, so be sure not to forget to stop and enjoy them. When reaching the top, keep your eye open for any paragliders ready to take off. From there, we will descend down the panoramic ridge to the valley of the emerald Soča River, where we’ll relax at its banks, pools, gorges, and cascades.

DAY 8 – Departure

The final day of your holiday will be left for you to explore Europe’s greenest capital and remember all the best moments and experiences of the past week in one of its many bars and restaurants. Even though the holiday ends here, the memories and the photos will remain for some time.
