Description

Setting out from Ajaccio, this holiday programme will take you across some of the most attractive parts of the island allowing sumptuous mountain and sea views and a variety of landscapes. From the gulf of Sagone, to the Greek village of Cargèse and perched Piana, on through the Calanches, up to the col de Verghio, before dropping down to the valley of the Niolu. Corte the island’s historical capital is a rare treat to be discovered before the climb up through the majestic pine trees to the forests of Vizzavona.

Itinerary

Example itinerary:

 

Day 1 – Ajaccio

Arrive in Ajaccio and check into your comfortable central hotel. Time to explore the town, the ambiance is Mediterranean and vibrant and the old town is always buzzing with life. Roadbike hire available in Ajaccio. A short transfer is necessary to the rental shop.

Day 2 – Ajaccio to Cargese

You escape town and start cycling north towards the vast gulf of Sagone. This coastline is indented with wide open bays, and high mountains dropping down to the sea. Continue to Cargèse, the picturesque Greek village with its twin churches. Night in a comfortable hotel in Cargese. 51km, 725m, 645m.

Day 3 – Cargese to Evisa

Today you head ever higher to Piana, one of the most beautifully situated Corsican villages, before heading into the Calanches, the spectacular chaos of red granite pinnacles perfumed by the clinging maritime pines, drop down to Porto, then up around the Spelunca gorge to arrive in Evisa, the pearl of the mountains. 66km, +1350m, -580m.

Day 4 – Evisa to Corte

Today you are climbing again, through the pine tree forest of Aitone over the Col de Vergio to enjoy a wonderful descent towards the remote, traditional Niolu Valley and on to Corte. Corte is the traditional heart of Corsica, surrounded by high mountains. 66km, +950m, -1330m.

Day 5 – Corte to Vizzavona

From Corte, you can explore the region of the Venecais, the hilltop villages to the south of the old capital Vénaco, Vivario and onto Vizzavona. Night in a comfortable hotel in this hamlet, once popular with the English gentry who holidayed here in the early 20th Century. 32km, +995m, -315m.

Day 6 – Vizzavona to Ajaccio

A superb descent from high mountains towards the sea by the valley of Gravona and on to Ajaccio. Arrive into Ajaccio and head fo your comfortable hotel in the heart of town. 60km, 750m, 1720m.

Day 7 – Ajaccio

End of holiday after breakfast in Ajaccio, extra nights available.
